When refugees first arrive in the new home, one of their biggest needs is to learn or improve their English.

Our ESOL Classes meet during the school year at Beaverton Foursquare Church, East Building, 13565 SW Walker Road, Beaverton, OR. Childcare is provided through age 5, and transportation help is available depending on location and available personel. Classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30-11:30. Fall classes will begin on September 12, 2022.

We offer something for all levels, from pre-literate to advanced. From learning the alphabet and survival English, to working on fluency and understanding American colloquial speech, our classes have been formulated to fit your needs. Additionally, each class begins with a half hour concentration on conversational English. Students meet in small groups with a tutor from 9:30 to 10 to practice conversation and oral expression, before separating into their classrooms at 10 for a time to focus on the four main aspects of language learning: reading, writing, listening and conversation.

Classes are free, but we do require a once-a-year registration fee of $40 which also covers student books.

Summer activities are for our established students, and include:

  • Mornings in the Park. While their children play, women practice conversational English in an informal setting.

  • Cooking classes. For our advanced classes. A fun, hands-on way to learn some new skills while improving your English.

  • Book club. Also for advanced classes. Meet bi-weekly to discuss vocabulary and concepts.

  • ESOL Cafes: weekly meetings at a local coffee shop to practice conversational English.
